Assoc. Professor Letha Ch'ien reviews 'Claiming Space'
Claiming Space, at Montalvo Arts Center, welcomes artwork by a diverse group of artists who would not have been welcome originally at the site. Montalvo was built as the estate of Senator James D. Phelan who famously campaigned with the anti-Asian slogan "Keep California White" in 1920. In Strike (shown), Hank Willis Thomas resists the consequences of white supremacist thinking.
